Microsoft 365 Personal vs Family at a glance
| Question | Personal | Family |
|---|---|---|
| People covered | 1 person | Up to 6 people total |
| Cloud storage | 1 TB for that person | Up to 6 TB total: 1 TB per person |
| Installations | Install on all compatible devices | Each person installs on all compatible devices |
| Simultaneous sign-ins | Up to 5 devices for the subscriber | Up to 5 devices per person |
| Account ownership | One Microsoft account owns and manages the plan | Owner manages sharing; every member uses a separate Microsoft account |
| AI features | Available to the subscriber under Microsoft's current plan limits | Included AI features are for the owner only, not shared members |
| Rapid Key format | 12-month digital subscription code | 12-month digital subscription code |
The common misconception is that Personal is a “one-device plan.” It is not. Microsoft's current comparison says Personal is for one person, and that person can use the subscription across their devices while signed in to five at a time. Family multiplies the number of people, not the simultaneous-device limit for a single shared login.

People, devices, and storage: how Family sharing works
A Family subscription owner can invite up to five other people. Each invited person accepts with their own Microsoft account. Microsoft says each person can install the apps on all their devices and be signed in on five at the same time. Their account, files, email, and 1 TB OneDrive allocation remain separate; the owner is sharing a subscription benefit, not a username and password.
- For one person with many devices: Personal is normally enough because it is not restricted to a single installation.
- For a couple or household: Family can make sense as soon as a second person needs desktop apps and private 1 TB storage.
- For six people: Family provides up to 6 TB only when six separate eligible accounts each use their 1 TB allocation; it is not one pooled 6 TB drive.
- For a small business: neither home plan replaces Microsoft 365 Business plans with organizational administration, business email, and business-specific controls.
- For a shared computer: people should still sign into their own accounts rather than share the owner's credentials.
The plan owner can stop sharing with someone. Because membership and ongoing access are managed from the owner's Microsoft account, Family is suitable for people the owner intends to manage as a household group—not for selling anonymous “seats” or sharing one password among strangers.
The AI-benefit caveat most comparisons miss
Microsoft currently states that AI features included in Microsoft 365 Family are available only to the subscription owner and cannot be shared with other members. The non-owner members can receive the shareable apps and storage benefits, but buyers should not multiply the plan's AI usage allowance by six.

How to redeem a Personal or Family subscription code
- Decide which Microsoft account should permanently own and manage the subscription.
- Go to microsoft365.com/setup or office.com/setup.
- Sign in with that Microsoft account, or create one. For a renewal, use the account already associated with the subscription.
- Enter the 25-character product key without hyphens when prompted.
- Select the country or region where you live or do your banking, as Microsoft recommends, and review the plan shown before confirming.
- Finish redemption and verify the new expiration date in the Microsoft account's Services & subscriptions area.
- For Family, invite other members from the owner's Microsoft account. Each invited person accepts with their own account.
The product key associates the subscription with the redeeming Microsoft account. After redemption, Microsoft says that account—not the key—is used to install or reinstall the apps. If setup says a key has already been used, first check whether the subscription is already attached to the correct account before assuming the code failed.
Renewal and stacking caveats
Microsoft supports renewal with a new product key. Its current support article says entering more than one key extends the subscription time and allows a maximum total duration of five years. Stacking additional codes does not create more installations and does not increase the storage allocation.
- Use the right account. A renewal code should be redeemed while signed in to the account already associated with the subscription.
- Check the plan name. Personal and Family are not interchangeable labels. Read the screen before accepting any conversion or change.
- Check the displayed end date. Confirm that redemption extended the subscription as expected.
- Five years is the ceiling. Do not buy enough codes to push the subscription beyond Microsoft's stated maximum duration.
- Recurring billing is separate. Review the account's recurring-billing setting and next charge after redeeming a prepaid code.
- Region matters. Use a code intended for the account and region shown on the product listing; Microsoft recommends selecting the country where you live or bank.
If you currently have a different Microsoft 365 home plan, check Microsoft's live conversion choices before redeeming. The result can depend on the existing subscription and the code being entered, so a retailer should not promise an exact conversion without confirmation on Microsoft's redemption screen.
Buying a 12-month code with crypto
- Choose Personal or Family based on the number of people and who needs the included AI benefits.
- Confirm the product is a 12-month subscription code, not a shared Microsoft account, business seat, or one-time-purchase edition of Office.
- Check the listed region, delivery estimate, reference price, retailer service fee, and final total.
- Select the crypto asset and exact network. For stablecoins, the token ticker alone is not enough—the chain must match.
- Send the quoted amount to the order-specific address and submit the public transaction identifier for verification.
- After delivery, redeem the code yourself on Microsoft's official setup domain. Rapid Key does not need your Microsoft password or one-time code.
Microsoft warns that separately sold keys can be stolen, abused, or unauthorized and may later be blocked. Keep the retailer receipt and delivery message. Avoid any seller that substitutes volume, education, workplace, or another program-specific key for the exact consumer subscription advertised. If a delivered code is rejected, capture the complete Microsoft error and contact the seller without posting the full key publicly.
